Importance of interoception

Interoception is receiving increasing attention in neuropsychology. Initial studies show the therapeutic potential of interoceptive methods.

Interoception refers to the perception and sensitivity to internal physical states. It includes the ability to perceive signals from within the body, such as heart rate, breathing rate, hunger, thirst, fatigue, and emotional states.

Interoception enables one to respond to these internal stimuli and regulate one's well-being.

Overall, interoception helps create a more conscious connection with our bodies and improves our responses to internal and external stimuli. It has wide applicability in various areas ranging from health to personal development.

Healthcare - Prevention and Rehabilitation

Interoception plays an important role in the medical diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Patients who are able to accurately perceive their internal states can provide medical professionals with valuable information about their symptoms and health conditions and actively engage in prevention.

Psychology and pain therapy

In psychotherapy, interoception can be used to help people become more aware of their own thoughts, emotions and physical sensations. This can be helpful in dealing with pain, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and trauma

Mindfulness and meditation

Interoception is a central aspect of mindfulness and meditation practices. By focusing on your own inner states, you can establish a deeper connection with yourself and increase awareness of the present moment.

Stress management and emotion regulation

Interoception is closely linked to emotional regulation. People who are good at recognizing their internal emotional states can cope with stress more effectively and improve their mental health.

Sports and exercise

Athletes and sportsmen use proprioception, a skill closely related to interoception, to sense the position and movement of their limbs. This helps improve coordination, balance and performance.

Proprioception improved by special training methods is the basis of the seemingly unreal power transfers of internal martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan.

Self-regulation

The ability to interocept allows us to respond appropriately to physical needs. By understanding our internal signals, we can better pay attention to when we need rest, exercise, food or relaxation.
